Bhubaneswar, May 30: When the state is gearing up for a mass recitation of patriotic song ''Bande Utkal Janani this evening, many might not have known its lyricist. He is no other than Kantakabi Laxmikanta Mohapatra. This song was first sung at the Utkal Sammilani's Conference at Balasore in 1912, This song was used as a weapon by the Utkal Sammilani to emancipate Odisha. When Odisha became a state on 1 April 1936, this song was sung. Though the song has not been accorded the official status of state song, it is sung in the Odisha state Assembly at the end of the session and also at various State functions. Kantakabi was born on December 9 in 1888 and belongs to Talapada village under Tihidi block in Bhadrak district. He breathed his last in 1953. Laxmikanta had composed powerful nationalist poems to reach the grass root level of the society during freedom struggle. Since the first phase of Gandhian era that is from Non-Cooperation movement, Laxmikant had written many nationalist poems which had their tremendous impact on youths.
