Aggressive elephant fitted with GPS Radio Collar in Sundargarh’s Toda Forest

In a coordinated effort, a notorious elephant on Wednesday was tranquilized and fitted with a GPS-enabled radio collar in the Toda Forest under the Koida range in Sundargarh district.

Bonai, Sept 18: In a coordinated effort, a wild elephant on Wednesday was tranquilized and fitted with a GPS-enabled radio collar in the Toda Forest under the Koida range in Sundargarh district. The operation involved a team of 60 officials from the state forest department, supported by experts from Rourkela, Bonai, Satakosia, and Kapilas.

Lalit Kumar Patra, the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Bonai, stated that the elephant, known for its aggressive behavior, was monitored for five hours before being safely sedated. Following the tranquilization, a GPS radio collar was attached to the animal to track its movements and ensure human safety.

“The elephant’s health is stable, and it has been released back into the forest,” Patra said. He emphasized that the radio collar will help monitor the elephant’s movements, aiming to prevent further conflicts between the animal and local communities.”

Patra also added that if needed, and upon direction from the state government, the elephant may be relocated to ensure safety and mitigate future risks. The forest department will continue to monitor the elephant closely to manage any potential dangers.
