Bhadrak, Dec 31: In a significant archaeological discovery, intricately carved Shaiva and Buddhist sculptures, dating back to the 6th-7th century CE, have been unearthed along the banks of the Baitarani River near Maninathpur Village in the Bhandaripokhari block of Odisha's Bhadrak district.

The discovery includes 18 exquisite sculptures depicting Shaiva deities like Shiva, Parvati, and Ganesha, alongside Buddhist figures such as Buddha, Tara, and Padmapani. Researchers also uncovered miniature temples and ‘argha stupas,’ providing valuable insights into the religious and artistic practices of the era.

The discovery was initiated by a local youth, Bibekananda, who stumbled upon a statue during his morning walk. Recognising its historical significance, he informed the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH). Following this, young researcher Biswambhar Raut inspected the site and confirmed the presence of these ancient artefacts.

Renowned archaeologist Sunil Pattnaik highlighted the sculptures' intricate artistry, noting that they were crafted from Khondalite stone. He praised the detailed carvings, which include depictions of dancing figures and Bhairava, showcasing the region’s unparalleled craftsmanship.

The artefacts have been transferred to the Buddhist Vihara Museum for preservation and public display. Experts believe this discovery underscores Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and its dual significance in Shaiva and Buddhist traditions.

This latest find reaffirms the historical importance of the Bhadrak region and adds to Odisha's treasure trove of ancient art and archaeological marvels.
