Angul, June 27: Police on Thursday sealed a private eye clinic after 13 people reported losing partial vision following cataract surgeries performed there last week.
According to the report, the surgeries took place on June 20, with 26 individuals undergoing the procedure. By the next day, 13 patients experienced severe eye pain, headaches, and vision problems. They were moved to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) for treatment, where most have been discharged, but two elderly patients remain under care.
Dr Lal Mohan Nayak, superintendent of Vimsar, Burla said , "We are offering treatment to the affected eyes. While we hope for successful outcomes, we cannot guarantee them. Our goal is their recovery, although there may be a compromise in vision".
Concerned relatives blamed the clinic for faulty surgery. An investigation suggests the cause could be infection post-surgery, possibly due to inadequately sterilized surgical tools. District officials have sealed the clinic and warned of legal action if safety protocols were not followed.
