New Delhi, Oct 12: The Animal Welfare experts of Anant Ambani's Vantara (Forest Star) became savior for Shankar, the lone African elephant lock-chained in Delhi National park which was getting wilder due to its peak musth period.
No physical treatments following tranquilisation, no medications, but Nature’s care provided by the Vantara team is reportedly bringing miracle with the mad and fierce behavior of the pachyderm which has sustained grievous injuries on its tusks and infractured toenails for which it was continuously hobbling on its front legs.
Forest and Environment Ministry sources said that, the fierce elephant went uncontrollable when it became more aggressive posing threats to the rearer.The situation demanded immediate intervention and a collaborative effort of ace animal experts.
Following this, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, led by Union Minister of State Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh sought the technical aid of the animal welfare team from Vantara, a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation group based in Jamnagar, led by Anant Ambani.
Within 24 hours of receiving the call, Vantara’s team of skilled veterinarians and trainers arrived at the zoo with essential medical supplies and equipment to stabilise Shankar’s medicial conditions.
Upon arrival, the veterinary experts conducted a detailed clinical examination and initiated a comprehensive treatment protocol. The first step was to remove the hobbles restricting Shankar’s movement, allowing him to roam more freely within his enclosure.
Later,the elephant was fed with specified diet prescribed by the dietician. Nature’s care such as scope for sand and mud baths were provided to stimulate his mental and physical well-being and to ventilate its anxiety. The team also began installing specially designed rubber mats to provide comfort to Shankar’s feet and aid his recovery. These modifications create a more supportive and healthy environment for the elephant began working.
With the intervention of the Vantara team Shankar’s condition showed remarkable improvement when elephant was found more active, foraging for food, and exhibiting better overall health. The ongoing monitoring and care, spearheaded by Vantara’s team, has been crucial in providing immediate relief and supporting his continued recovery.
The wildlife experts' research-based intervention gained from Vantara, highlights a promising future for Shankar’s health and well-being.The continued efforts to enrich his environment and provide customised care are expected to improve his quality of life, with close monitoring and adjustments to his dietery provisions and behavioural activities.
