New Delhi, December 17: The Congress fiercely opposed the bills proposing simultaneous elections, calling them "anti-constitutional" and a "threat to federalism".
The bills, comprising a Constitution amendment and an ordinary law, were tabled in the Lok Sabha amidst heated debates.
Opposition leaders argued that the BJP’s failure to secure a two-thirds majority during the voting stage reflects the impracticality of passing a constitutional amendment. They further criticized the move as undermining India’s federal structure. However, the government dismissed the allegations, defending the bills as a step toward streamlined governance.
The fiery session showcased deep divisions, with the Opposition labeling the legislation an attack on democratic principles.
