Bhubaneswar, Nov 6: Bhubaneswar is set to enhance commuter comfort and boost renewable energy use by introducing solar sheds at major traffic intersections. This initiative aims to shield pedestrians from the intense heat while also addressing the city's electricity needs through sustainable sources.
The proposal, submitted by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) to the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA), outlines plans to pilot the project at two prominent locations: AG Square and Kalinga Hospital Square.
Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das explained that after assessing the feasibility of these initial installations, the city plans to expand the initiative to other busy intersections. Reflecting on the previous summer, Mayor Das noted that BMC had set up temporary shelters at various traffic spots, which received positive feedback from the public.
These permanent solar sheds will not only provide shade to commuters but will also feature solar panels on their roofs, generating electricity for streetlights and other infrastructure in the area. As part of this broader plan, around 42 sections of the road network have been earmarked by OREDA and TPCODL, in collaboration with BMC, for phased integration of solar-powered street lighting
The designs will ensure climate resilience, allowing them to endure strong winds and adverse weather conditions, and will be carefully planned to avoid interference with the city's proposed metro project. This solar shed initiative aligns with the 'Green Energy and Solar City' vision put forth by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for Bhubaneswar.
