Jagatsinghpur, July 16: In the midst of profound grief, the family of a man who tragically lost his life in a road mishap has made a decision that will forever impact the lives of others. By choosing to donate the deceased’s organs, this courageous family has transformed an unimaginable loss into a beacon of hope and healing for those in desperate need.

Birendra Prasad Swain (58), a BJD worker from Raghunathpur block in Jagatsinghpur district, met with a tragic end but left behind a legacy of hope and life through organ donation. Swain succumbed to injuries sustained in a severe car accident but his family’s selfless decision to donate his organs has brought new life to others.

On a fateful night, while returning home from a wedding party on his bike, Birendra Swain was struck by a speeding car, resulting in grave injuries. Local residents promptly rescued him and rushed him to the Raghunathpur Community Healthcare Center (CHC). Given the severity of his head injuries, he was transferred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced treatment.

Despite the relentless efforts of the medical team at SCB, Swain's condition deteriorated. Under the supervision of Dr. Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra, Associate Professor at SCB, Swain was declared brain dead while receiving treatment in the ICU. This tragic diagnosis marked a sad moment for his family and the local community.

In their moment of profound grief, Birendra Swain's family made a courageous and generous decision to donate his organs, aiming to save the lives of others. After being declared brain dead, the way for the organ donation procedures was paved.

Health experts from the Department of Urology at SCB removed two kidneys from Swain's body. One kidney was successfully transplanted into a patient at SCB, while the other was sent to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for another patient in need. Despite the extensive preparations, only the kidneys could be harvested; the liver and other organs were not collected.

The incident drew significant attention, with Tirtol MLA Ramakanta Bhoi visiting the hospital late at night to offer support and learn about the situation firsthand.

Birendra Prasad Swain’s untimely death has cast a shadow over the Raghunathpur block and the broader Jagatsinghpur district. Yet, his family’s decision to donate his organs has turned a personal loss into a public gift, underscoring the importance and impact of organ donation.
