Chennai, June 29: Replying to India women's massive first innings score of 603/6 declared, visitors South Africa were 236/4 in 72 overs at stumps on Day 2 of the solitary Test match, here on Saturday.

The Proteas were still trailing by 367 runs in their first innings. For the visitors, top order batter Sonu Luus (65) and seasoned all-rounder Marizanne Kapp (68 not out) scored half centuries.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt (20) and her opening partner Aneeke Bosch (39) though got good starts and shared a 33-run partnership for the first wicket, but just could not carry on for long.

Delmi Tucker was dismissed with a 8-ball duck, falling prey to spinner Sneh Rana as keeper Richa Ghosh held a smart catch. Rana was the pick of the Indian bowlers on Day 2 with three scalps.

Though India got a few quick wickets, but once experienced Marizanne Kapp took charge at the centre, she tried to consolidate the African innings.

Kapp was batting with authority on 69*, in company of Nadine de Klerk (27*). The two were looking at ease with an unbroken 38 runs partnership for the 5th wicket, when umpires announced Stumps for Day 2.

Earlier, India declared their first innings at 603/6, with keeper-batter Richa Ghosh hitting a stroke-filled 86 in just 90 balls and her skipper Harmanpreet Kaur scored 69.

On Day 1, Indian openers dominated the Proteas. Shafali Verma (205) and Smriti Mandhana (149) shared a 292 runs partnership for the first wicket.

Young Satheesh Shuba (15) and Jemimah Rodrigues (55) too had played with confidence.

Among the South African bowlers, Delmi Tucker 2/141 was the most successful with two scalps against her name.

Brief Scores at Stumps on Day 2:

India 603/6 (d) in 115.1 overs,

South Africa 236/4 in 72 overs.

Match to Continue.
