Cyclone Dana looms over Odisha: IMD issues Red Warning to these districts

Bhubaneswar, Oct 21: At a time, the Cyclone Dana looms over the Odisha coast, the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal districts of the state.

Apart from it, several remote districts farther from the coastal lines are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the cyclonic system, said IMD Regional Center Bhubaneswar on Monday.

The IMD officials said, Odisha is heading towards an impending cyclone threat as a low pressure area has been already formed over the Eastcentral Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea on Monday. It will cause heavy to very heavy rains in the Coastal districts including Puri, Khordha, Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur.

In a bid for ensuring essential precaution pretty earlier,the IMD has issued Red Warning for the people of of Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur regarding heavy to extremely heavy rainfall during this period.

Due to the LPA over the BoB, almost all districts across the state are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall during the transit of low pressure to intensify into a deep depression. The low pressure is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression by October 22 morning and into a cyclonic storm by October 23, 2024 over eastcentral Bay of Bengal, the IMD said in one of its newscasts.Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and reach northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha-West Bengal coasts by October 24 morning.

Earlier on Sunday the IMD on Sunday had predicted that several parts of Odisha were likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall under the influence of the brewing up low pressure. Accordingly,  a few parts of Puri, Kornark had experienced light rain and thunder last evening whereas some parts of Jagatsinghpur , Kendrapada and Cuttack have witnessed thunderstorms in the morning. The sky is also found filled with floating clouds, despite withdrawal of the monsoon.
