Berhampur, Dec 2: After inhumane acts by a group of actors on the Jatra stage in which they killed a pig by biting and allegedly consumed some meat during a theatrical performance of the epic ‘Ramayana’ in Odisha’s Ganjam district, the organizer of the Jatra was arrested on Sunday.
A traditional enactment of the Ramayana took place in Ralaba village, located in the Hinjili block of the district, on the night of November 24. During the performance, some actors reportedly killed a pig and allegedly consumed its meat while portraying demonic characters. Additionally, they are said to have used snakes on stage to demonstrate their daring skills.
The incident only came to light after a video of the disturbing act went viral on social media.
What has shocked many is that, despite hundreds of people watching the cultural program, none of the spectators protested or intervened to stop the act.
The actors' actions have since sparked widespread outrage, especially among animal rights activists, who are calling for strict action to ensure that such incidents are never repeated. In response, local forest officials have reportedly launched an investigation into the matter.
