Hyderabad, Ap 6: Shanti Swaroop, the iconic face of Telugu news on Doordarshan, passed away on Friday in Hyderabad at the age of 70.
He had been admitted to Yashoda Hospital two days prior for a heart ailment and succumbed to it during treatment.
Beginning his illustrious career on November 14, 1983, Shanti Swaroop became a familiar presence in Telugu households as he delivered news updates. His tenure at Doordarshan spanned nearly three decades until his retirement in 2011. Before joining Doordarshan, he had served in the news division of All India Radio in Hyderabad in the early 1970s as a newsreel assistant.
Survived by his two daughters, Shanti Swaroop's passing drew condolences from the Chief Ministers of both Telugu states. Telangana CM A Revanth Reddy praised his pioneering role as the first-generation newsreader, acknowledging his significant contribution to Telugu media. Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed sorrow, highlighting Shanti Swaroop's inspirational journey, especially during an era of limited technology.
