Chandigarh, October 5: Haryana recorded a 61% voter turnout till 5 PM in the single-phase assembly elections across its 90 constituencies, according to the Election Commission of India.
The highest voter turnout was seen in Mewat at 68.28%, while Gurugram registered the lowest at 49.97%. Other notable districts include Yamunanagar (67.93%) and Hisar (64.16%). Voting began at 7 AM and concluded by 6 PM, with 1,031 candidates contesting across 20,632 polling booths.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed confidence in the BJP's performance over the last decade, dismissing Congress's influence. On the other hand, Congress leader and wrestler Bajrang Punia called for a Congress government, while BJP supporter Mahavir Singh Phogat praised the party’s work over the past 10 years.
The main contenders in this election are the BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), along with alliances between the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and Azad Samaj Party (ASP). Results will be declared on October 8, alongside those for Jammu and Kashmir.
In 2019, the BJP secured 40 seats and formed a coalition government with the JJP, which won 10 seats, while Congress won 31 seats. However, the JJP has since left the coalition.
