Higher Education Department imposes 7-hr work rule for academic staff

Bhubaneswar, June 19: With the commencement of the 2024-25 academic session, the Higher Education Department has mandated that all teaching and non-teaching staff in higher education institutes adhere strictly to a seven-hour workday.
In a directive issued on Tuesday, the department instructed principals of all government, aided, and unaided colleges to ensure that staff members are present on campus from 10 am to 5 pm on working days and submit their biometric attendance. Additionally, institutions are required to open their gates before 10 am for the convenience of students.
The seven-hour work rule for teachers in government colleges was introduced in 2019, extending the previous five-hour duty period. However, an opinion survey conducted last year revealed that many students alleged faculty members were not spending the required seven hours on campus for academic activities.
In response, the Higher Education Department has decided that its performance tracking cell will collect monthly reports from colleges and universities to verify compliance with the seven-hour attendance requirement.
