Bhubaneswar, Oct 25: A group of inmates at the high-security Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar attacked a jailor and two warders on Friday, leaving them injured.
The incident occurred when a scuffle broke out between two groups of prisoners. The jailor intervened to de-escalate the situation, but he was attacked with a blade, sustaining injuries to his hand. Two warders who tried to help were also injured in the ensuing chaos.
As the fight turned ugly, prison staff pressed the siren button after which a team from Laxmisagar police station rushed to the spot.
According to reports, the attackers were reportedly drug addicts who were upset about being placed in the high-security ward. They demanded to be transferred elsewhere. It remains unclear how the inmates obtained the blade within the jail premises.
The Jharpada Special Jail superintendent confirmed the incident, stating that the accused inmates were habitual offenders and had been placed in the high-security ward for security reasons. A detailed inquiry into the incident is underway.
A case has been registered at Laxmisagar police station in connection with the attack.
