New Delhi, Dec 31: India has expressed its commitment to providing "all possible help" to the family of Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse who has been sentenced to death in Yemen for the alleged murder of a Yemeni national.
Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi confirmed the death sentence for Priya, who has been imprisoned since 2017.
A spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Randhir Jaiswal, said, "We are aware of the sentencing of Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that her family is exploring relevant options, and the government is extending all possible support in this matter."
Priya, a native of Palakkad in Kerala, was arrested in July 2017 in connection with the murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mehdi. A trial court in Sana’a sentenced her to death in 2020, and in November 2023, Yemen’s Supreme Judicial Council upheld the sentence. President al-Alimi's approval of the death sentence has further intensified the situation.
