Mahakumbh Mela 2025, a place for spiritual gathering of epic proportions, is known for its ancient rituals and bring is millions of devotees. This year, it also made history in an unexpected way: by bringing international flights back to Prayagraj Airport after a 93-year break. Laurene Powell Jobs, philanthropist and wife of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, touched down in Prayagraj on a Bhutan Airways plane, marking a significant moment for the airport and the city.
Prayagraj Airport has a rich history, having been one of India's first international airports. Back in 1932, it hosted flights to London, connecting India to the world. However, international operations ceased after that, leaving a gap in the city's aviation history.
Powell Jobs's arrival bought the airport back onto the international map. Her visit to the Mahakumbh Mela was a deeply personal one. She embraced the spiritual significance of the event, even adopting the name "Kamala" and participating in the traditional Kalpavas ritual. This involved daily dips in the sacred rivers, meditation, and a strict vegetarianand sattwik diet.
Unfortunately, the intense environment and crowds took a toll on her health, and she experienced some some untodo challenges during her stay. Despite this, her visit left a lasting impact, symbolising the global reach of the Mahakumbh and its ability to draw people from all walks of life. Her arrival & departure on the Bhutan Airways plane marked the beginning of a new chapter for Prayaraj Airport after 93 years; it has paved the way for international flights to the spiritual city.
