Berhampur, Mar 13: The renowned Maa Budhi Thakurani Yatra, one of the largest carnivals in southern Odisha, began at midnight on Tuesday, marking the start of a month-long celebration. The festival commenced with the presiding deity of Silk City, Maa Budhi Thakurani, visiting her father’s house on Desibehera Street.
This extravaganza is a significant cultural event for the Devangiris, the weaving community. Desibehera, often referred to as the "father of the goddess," has been instrumental in organizing the festival.
As per tradition, Desibehera and other dignitaries participated in a procession to the Thakurani temple to invite the goddess. Later that evening, they returned with a garland made of "itala" (ita malli) flowers in a basket. The garland was placed inside a temporary structure set up in front of Desibehera’s house.
Desibehera confirmed that the festival will officially kick off its famed Ghata Parikrama on the third day, as per custom.
To ensure safety and order, adequate security measures have been implemented throughout the event.
