Nandankanan zoo braces up to face Cyclone Dana: Extensive preventive measures chalked out by authorities

Bhubaneswar, Oct 22: With the tremendous losses and devastations wreaked by the Super Cyclone in 1099 and Fani in 2019 in the Nandankanan Zoological Park, the zoo authorities are all set to face the incoming Cyclone dana, that’s supposed to hit Odisha now.
The zoo authorities have taken preventive measures to protect its inmate animal resources and the ecology from the incessant rain, heavy and stormy winds and other unforeseen adversities during the projection of the Cyclone Dana.
In view of the probable cyclonic storm Dana, the Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar has come up with a special action plan to deal with the unexpected situation.
The plan highlights special measures to be undertaken before and post the cyclone Dana.
Among other initiatives, according to the sources of the Nandankanan authorites, a dedicated control room is being set up and it will be manned round the clock by ACFs.
Similarly, the zoo might be closed for visitors, if needed.A mock is being conducted for all staffers before deployment inside the zoo.All staffers have been asked not to take leave during the emergency period.
Non-perishable animal feed shall be kept stocked for 2 to 3 days if necessary.All necessary medicines/ equipment shall be kept ready in the zoo hospital to meet any eventuality during cyclone and its aftermath.
Dry, dangerous and dead trees near and inside enclosures, particularly for large cats, are trimmed.
Similarly for bird resources, safe and strong wooden boxes are prepared to cage for their hasslefree shelter.
