Bhubaneswar, January 14: The famous Bhubaneswar Khandagiri Mela will see a change this year, with a strict ban on obscene dance performances.
The decision was taken by the Khandagiri Jatra committee during a meeting held today, which also involved police authorities.
This year, the famous Jatra shows will no longer feature inappropriate dance performances, marking a shift towards more modest entertainment. While dance acts will still be part of the performances, they will adhere to a more respectful and modest standard.
As a result, well-known performers such as Rani Priyadarshini, Nisha Moharana, and Bhagyashree Sahoo, who were previously popular for their controversial performances, will no longer be able to showcase such acts.
The move comes in response to public outcry from intellectuals, social activists, and the general public, who have called for measures to curb the vulgarity in Jatra shows.
Many had expressed concerns that such performances, particularly those featuring nudity, negatively impact society and make it difficult for families to enjoy the shows together.
The Khandagiri Jatra for 2025 will begin on Magha Saptami and continue until February 17, with a total of 12 Jatra troupes are scheduled to perform during this time.
