Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik has assured to cover the educational expenses of the two young daughters of Sahadev Nayak, a Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) employee who was tragically killed in broad daylight on January 8.

Nayak, 36, served as a supervisor for sanitation workers at BMC and was also a "Police Mitra," assisting law enforcement in tackling drug trafficking in the city. His untimely death has shocked the community.

In addition to this commitment, Patnaik, who also serves as the leader of the opposition in the Odisha Assembly, provided the family with Rs 50,000 to help with funeral arrangements.

"I met Naveen Patnaik, and he gave me Rs 50,000 for my husband’s last rites. He also assured me that he would take care of my daughters’ education," said Nayak's wife, after meeting Patnaik at his residence, Naveen Niwas, on Saturday.

Earlier, Nayak had visited Naveen Niwas with his family to wish Patnaik a happy New Year. Patnaik, expressing solidarity with the family, also reaffirmed his support for their pursuit of justice in the murder case.

In connection with Nayak's death, the police have arrested five individuals, including two women. Meanwhile, the BMC has announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the family and has offered a job as a sanitary supervisor to Nayak’s widow.
