Pausha Purnima 2025: Significance, inauspicious timing & rituals

Today marks the auspicious occasion of Pausha Purnima in the Hindu month of Pausha, this full moon day holds immense religious significance. 

Observing a fast on this day and performing the Satyanarayan Katha at home is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to families. 

Worshipping Lord Shiva on Pausha Purnima is also said to fulfil the desire.

Rituals:

Devotees traditionally offer water to the Sun God on Pausha Purnima by filling a copper vessel with water and reciting the mantra-"Om Suryaya Namah."

According to the Vishnu Purana and Brahma Vaivarta Purana, worshipping the Sun God brings success, peace, and good fortune while eliminating diseases and doshas. 

Inauspicious timings:

To ensure rituals and prayers are performed at the right time, devotees should avoid the following inauspicious periods: Yamaganda: 11:11 AM to 12:30 PM  

Aadal Yoga: 7:15 AM to 10:38 AM  

Gulika Kaal: 1:49 PM to 3:07 PM  

Bhadra Kaal: 7:15 AM to 4:26 PM  

Special observances:

A unique tradition on Pausha Purnima involves taking a bath with water mixed with sesame seeds. It symbolises purification.

Devotees also prepare offerings of jaggery and sesame seeds for the deities.
