Bhubaneswar, Dec 25: Seven elephant calves will undergo kumki training at Kumarkhunti centre within the Chandaka Dampara Wildlife Sanctuary on the outskirts of the city.
The sanctuary administration has begun the process. Mahouts of Odisha, Assam and Karnataka will be engaged to train the elefant calves. The Kumki training will begin soon by expert trainers, said Chandaka DFO Sarat Behera.
Kartika, Uma, Padma, Shyama and Shiba will be brought to Kumarkhunti centre from Kapilash in Dhenkanal district. Similarly, Mama from Nandankanan and Jagannath fron Similipal South Jenabili will be trained here.
The elephants will be engaged to watch forests after getting Kumki training. They will watch poachers and timber mafias in the jungle. Besides, they will be used for travel of tourists.
Elephant calves those are separated from the herd in the forest are tamed and trained to be Kumki elephants.
