rath yatra schedule 2024

Snana Yatra or Snana Purnima, which takes place on the full-moon day of the month of Jyestha, is a sacred bathing ceremony for the deities– Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra. The sibling deities are placed on the bathing platform, where they are bathed with 108 pitchers of sacred water. Following the holy bath, the deities are adorned in Gajanana Besha. Early in the morning, the idols of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra are brought out from the Ratnasinhasan of the Jagannath Puri Temple. These idols are then taken to the snana bedi, or the bathing altar. Before the main bathing ceremony on Devasnana Purnima, priests perform various pujas and rituals using a total of 108 pitchers filled with herbal and aromatic water to bathe the three main deities. After the bath, the deities are dressed in Sada Besha. Later in the night, the three main deities – Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra – retire to the Anasar House. During this Anasar period, devotees are forbidden to see the idols of the Lord.

The main event, Gundicha Jatra, also known as Ghosa Jatra, will take place on July 7 this year. Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra come outside with a special ritual called Goti Pahandi. Then they will be placed on their magnificent chariots and pulled by devotees to the Gundicha Temple where the deities stay for nine days. This grand event not only attracts millions of pilgrims from across India but also captivates global audiences with its rich cultural heritage and inclusive spirit, embodying the essence of unity and divine grace.

The Bahuda Yatra, also known as the return journey of the Trinity, is a significant event that follows the Rath Yatra in Puri. After staying at the Gundicha Temple for nine days, Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra, embark on their journey back to the Jagannath Temple. This procession is marked by the deities being placed on their chariots amidst traditional rituals and the enthusiastic participation of devotees pulling the ropes. The Bahuda Yatra holds immense spiritual importance, symbolizing the return of the divine to their abode and concluding the annual journey that attracts devotees from across the world to witness and partake in its spiritual aura.

The Suna Besha, also known as the golden attire or golden adornment, is a spectacular ritual during which Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are adorned with elaborate golden ornaments. The deities are dressed in gold jewelry and embellishments, transforming their appearance into a dazzling spectacle that mesmerizes devotees and onlookers alike. The Suna Besha is a rare and auspicious occasion, symbolizing opulence and divine splendor, and it holds deep spiritual significance in the annual cycle of rituals associated with Lord Jagannath.

Adhara Pana, which will be celebrated on July 18, involves the offering of a special sweet aromatic and syrupy drink (pana) made of a mixture of milk, milk, cheese, fruits, camphor, and various herbs before Lord Jagannath and his siblings. It takes place after the deities return to their main temple following the Bahuda Yatra. The servitors offer the drink in nine different earthen pitchers on the three chariots. The offering is considered highly auspicious and is believed to confer blessings and purification upon the devotees who partake in it. The Adhara Pana ritual is performed with great devotion and marks the conclusion of the annual Rath Yatra festivities in Puri.

Niladri Bije, is the concluding ritual of the Rath Yatra festival involving Lord Jagannath and his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. The Niladri Bije Niti begins in the early morning of the Trayodashi Day in the month of Asadha. With a ceremonial festivity on the Grand Road, Lord Jagannath returns with his siblings from the chariot to the main temple in a remarkable procession known as Goti Pahandi. After coming abode, the deities are reunited with Maa Laxmi in the Shree Mandir after meeting Maa Bimala on the way. Later in the evening, the deities return to the bejeweled throne called Ratna Bedi after pacifying the anger and discontent of Maha Laxmi the presiding Goddess of the Jagannath Temple.
