The recent Ferris wheel accident in Rourkela has exposed a deeply troubling reality: a widespread disregard for safety standards at public gatherings and festivals, particularly during Durga Puja. While these events are meant to be joyous celebrations, they often become breeding grounds for potential hazards, putting countless lives at risk due to negligence and a lack of accountability.

The incident in Rourkela, where a malfunctioning Ferris wheel caused injuries to a family, is not an isolated case. It's a symptom of a larger systemic issue where safety regulations are often ignored or inadequately enforced. Amusement rides, a major attraction at these events, frequently operate without proper safety certifications. Authorities often fail to conduct thorough inspections and ensure that these rides meet the necessary standards, putting the lives of unsuspecting individuals, especially children, in jeopardy.

Beyond amusement rides, fire safety is another critical concern that demands immediate attention. Durga Puja pandals, often constructed with temporary materials and adorned with elaborate decorations, can become tinderboxes in the event of a fire. While police presence is common at these gatherings, the absence of fire extinguishers and trained firefighters is a glaring oversight. The use of open flames in rituals like hawan aka jagyna further amplifies the risk, making it imperative to have adequate fire safety measures in place.

Adding to the safety concerns is the unregulated operation of food stalls at these events. Many vendors operate without the mandatory FSSAI licenses, raising serious questions about food safety and hygiene. The use of potentially harmful coloring agents, unsafe gas connections, and the lack of proper oil quality monitoring pose significant health risks to consumers.

This blatant disregard for safety stems from a deeply ingrained "ostrich approach" adopted by many authorities during festivals. The mentality of turning a blind eye to potential hazards under the guise of festive cheer is simply unacceptable. This negligence not only jeopardizes public safety but also undermines the very spirit of the celebrations.

It's high time we demand a shift in attitude and a renewed commitment to safety. Stricter enforcement of safety regulations, coupled with clear accountability for officials overseeing these events, is paramount. Mandatory safety dry runs before any public gathering can help identify and address potential hazards proactively.

Furthermore, empowering the public with awareness campaigns that highlight safety measures and encourage reporting of violations can create a culture of collective responsibility. By fostering a sense of shared ownership for safety, we can ensure that Durga Puja and other festive gatherings remain joyous occasions, free from accidents and tragedies.
