Chikiti, Aug 21: Another victim has reportedly died due to alleged toxic liquor mishap in Chikiti in the Ganjam district on Wednesday.
With it the toll increased to two, said medical sources.
Earlier in the morning, one of the 20 victims who hospitalized after consuming spurious country liquor had died. The victim, a resident of Jenasahi village, passed away on Wednesday at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
The health condition of another victim is reportedly critical, with both being treated in the ICU. Additionally, 11 others are still receiving care in the hospital, with two in casualty, two in the ICU, and the remaining in the medicine ward.
The incident began when more than 15 people from Karbala and Jenasahi villages fell ill after consuming the tainted liquor sold near Moundpur on Monday. They were initially admitted to Chikiti Hospital with symptoms including stomach pain and vomiting. Fourteen of the affected individuals were later transferred to MKCG Hospital as their conditions worsened.
In response to the outbreak, police and Excise Department officials conducted searches in Moundpur, Jenapur, Karala, and surrounding areas. The cause of the illness is still under investigation to confirm if it was solely due to the contaminated liquor.
