Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, has arrived in India to visit the Mahakumbh, the world's largest religious congregation, taking place in Prayagraj. She received and got a Hindu name, "Kamala," bestowed upon her by Kailashanand Giri Maharaj of the Niranjani Akhara.
Laurene visited the sacred Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi with Giri Maharaj, where both prayed for the successful completion of the Mahakumbh. Giri Maharaj emphasized that Laurene is welcomed into the Niranjani Akhara, like a daughter
When asked if Laurene would be formally included in the Akhara's 'Peshwai' (religious procession), Giri Maharaj expressed openness to the idea, stating it is upto Laurene to decide upon her inclusion in the Peshwai. Giri Maharaj highlighted the significance of her visit, noting that many people come to the Kumbh seeking spiritual learning and connection.
During their visit to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Laurene respectfully observed the traditions, including viewing the Shivling from outside, as per custom. Giri Maharaj shared that she also intends to take a dip in the holy Ganges River during her time at the Kumbh.
Giri Maharaj also announced that the Niranjani Akhara will welcome a new Mahamandaleshwar (spiritual leader), Maharshi Vyasanand, who hails from USA. This reflects the global reach and appeal of the Mahakumbh.
