Guyana (West Indies), June 27: As India take on England in the second semifinal of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on Thursday, chances of rain playing spoilsport looms large.

With rains predicted in and around Guyana, where the second semifinal would be played, chances of a complete washout is not ruled out. 

In such a situation, with no play possible at all, based on their Super Eight performances, Rohit Sharma & Co will automatically play the final against South Africa on Saturday.

Because with no reserve day marked for the semifinal matches, the only option is to pick the winner on basis of their Super Eight performances.

Placed in Group 1 in the Super Eight, India defeated Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Australia to remain unbeaten. Being the No 1 team from the first group, India entered the semifinal.

Afghanistan were the second team from Group 1, who bowed out of the tournament being beaten by South Africa in the first semifinal.

In contrast, South Africa remained undefeated in Group 2 and England earned their semi berth as the second team from Group 2 after the Proteas.

Therefore, if rain washes out play completely, then India will enter the final ahead of England. 

But in case of a truncated match (few overs being deducted due to rain), then anything can happen.

India therefore. may wish that if rain has to play a spoilsport in the semifinal, then a complete washout is better than a truncated game.
