Cuttack, April 29: The Commissionerate of Police arrested three fake cops from Cuttack on Monday who used to loot cash and valuables from people impersonating themselves as members of crime control unit of police.
As the notorious fake cops went on the prowl in the Twin city the Badambadi police following a series of co-ordinated manhunts, busted three members of the gang and cracked their modus operandi.
According to the Police, the members of the gang were rampantly fooling commuters and common people purportedly acting as the civilians of Odisha police, and tactfully looting cash and gold jewellery from them.
On the complaint of a victim, Sibu Biswas, a resident of West Bengal who had lost huge amount and gold ornaments on April 19 this way, the Badambadi Police had formed a special squad to nab the looters.
The investigations zeroed at three perpetrators, two youths from Maharashtra and one from Madhya Pradesh, who were committing organised crime in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and other parts of Odisha.
Briefing on the gang and their crime history, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Swastik Panda said at least 14 similar cases have been registered in four Polices Stations in Cuttack, which are yet under investigation.
Further investigation is underway to nab other aides and to ascertain the gang’s signature in other towns across the state.
Worth mentioning, the fake-police gang had earlier looted an elderly woman in Bhubaneswar. Two youths tactically motivated the woman to take off her necklace, to get rid of snatchers. However, they fooled her and decamped with the necklace, replacing a fake one.
Similarly, a few months ago, a former Banker was looted in Angul with the same modus operandi.Two strong and stout civilians with police-like haircut followed the bank officer on a bike and asked him to hand over his gold ornaments, what he had worn, impersonating themselves as cops. Subsequently, they decamped with a necklace, a bracelet and some gold rings, returning some imitation ornaments to him.
