New Delhi, Dec 18: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has published a list of 21 "fake universities" operating across India, with eight of them located in Delhi, to alert students and the public.
The list, available on the UGC website, was shared following a statement from Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Parliament on Monday.
The government has called on state Chief Secretaries to take immediate legal action against these unauthorized institutions, which are issuing invalid degrees and deceiving students.
As part of the crackdown, FIRs have been lodged against several such institutions, and show-cause notices have been issued. Additionally, public notices and social media campaigns have been launched to raise awareness and prevent further exploitation of students.
In a separate development, Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, announced a budget increase of ₹2,875.29 crore for higher education for the 2024-25 fiscal year.
He also highlighted allocations of ₹556.86 crore for centrally funded institutions in Rajasthan, including IIT Jodhpur and MNIT Jaipur, as well as ₹535.99 crore for the development of IIM Udaipur and IIIT Kota.
