Why is it celebrated? Every year August 9 is celebrated as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples or World Tribal Day. On this day, in 1982, the first meeting of the United Nations working group on indigenous peoples took place in Geneva. World Tribal Day is observed to promote and protect the rights of the world's indigenous peoples and to recognize the achievements and contributions of local communities to the improvement of global problems such as environmental protection. The theme for 2021 is “We leave no one behind: indigenous peoples and calls for a new social contract”. What is the importance of the social contract for these tribes? A social contract is an unwritten agreement made by a company to cooperate for the purpose of social and economic benefit. Tribes in some parts of the world are not included in the social contract. A social contract involving tribes will help develop the culture and language of those who are suppressed. This will increase their ability to participate actively in the nation's political and economic activities. Transfer of knowledge from other communities will enable access to information and resources and lead to changes in the living, health and economic conditions of indigenous peoples. Global Social Inclusion Efforts In recent years and decades, many societies have tried to resolve problems through apologies, legislative reforms, truth and reconciliation efforts, and constitutional reforms. At the international level, these efforts have included the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and advisory bodies such as the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Tribes in India According to the 2011 census, tribes make up about 8.6% of the total population in India. There are about 700 ethnic groups and 75 High Risk Tribal Groups in India. The Gonds are the largest tribal group in India. Most tribal communities (62) are located in Odisha. No tribes were reported in Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi and Puducherry.
