44% Odisha people never check blood pressure: ICMY study

Bhubaneswar, April 13: Around  44.5 per cent people in the age group of 18 to 54 years in Odisha have never got their blood pressure (BP) checked, reveals a recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The study by ICMR’s National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR) found 55.5 pc people in the state check their BP while the national average was 76 percent.

The study also revealed that 17.2 percent people in Odisha suffer from hypertension and the national average was 34.4 percent.

The pre-hypertension was found to be 15.9 percent in Odisha against the national average of 33.7 percent.

Mayurbhanj and Nuapada were in the 11th and 19th place among the 20 bad performing districts in the country in terms of people measuring their blood pressure. Around 40 percent people, in 18-54 age bracket in Mayurbhanj and 42.1 percent in Nuapada got their BP checked.

Hypertension is directly responsible for 29 percent of all strokes and 24 percent of heart attacks in the country. Everyone should regularly check their BP after the age of 40, Said Prof Premakanta Mohanty of PGIMER and Capital Hospital.
