Bengaluru, Ap 20: In a disturbing incident, popular Kannada actress Harshika Poonacha revealed her apprehension about venturing outside in Bengaluru streets after her family encountered an attack by a mob for speaking in Kannada. She urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Karnataka Police to take stringent action against those involved.
The actress shared a video of the ordeal and pledged to advocate for other women or families facing similar situations in the state. Recounting the incident, Harshika stated that a mob of 20 to 30 individuals threatened and attacked her family, claiming they needed to "teach a lesson" to Kannada speakers.
Expressing her dismay, she questioned the safety of citizens and the sanctity of speaking the local language. "Is it wrong to speak in the local Kannada language? How safe are we in our city?" she voiced her concerns.
In a detailed social media post, Harshika described the harrowing encounter, which took place at a restaurant in Bengaluru's Pulikeshi Nagar area. She recounted how the situation escalated as the mob attempted to snatch her husband's gold chain and resorted to damaging their vehicle.
Despite seeking assistance from known police officials, including an emergency call to an inspector, Harshika lamented the lack of prompt action. The mob dispersed only after police intervention, leaving the family shaken by the incident.
Senior BJP leader R. Ashoka criticized the Congress government, attributing such incidents to the "politics of appeasement" prevailing in the state.
Harshika's courageous stand highlights the need for swift and decisive action to ensure the safety and security of citizens, irrespective of their language or background.
