Bhubaneswar, April 17: Sleuths of Custom Department on Wednesday seized a mysterious box containing huge cache of illegal raw gold from the Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar.
The quantity of gold is yet to be ascertained as the box is yet to be inventoried by the Custom officials.
The origin of the mysterious box which was reportedly ferried by an Indigo Flight, is under investigation.
At the same time, a Thai-based smuggler has been held from the Airport today who was reportedly smuggling gold capsules to Mumbai.
At least one kilogram of gold worth Rs 71 lakh in the form of capsules was seized from him by the Custom officials and security personnel from the Biju Patnaik International Airport.
According to sources, the smuggler was hiding the gold capsules inside his body. However, he was intercepted after he was scanned for the metal by technical teams, out of suspicion.
Interrogation is underway to unearth the modus operandi of the smuggler to ascertain the sources and destination where the illegal cache of gold was scheduled to be delivered.
