Bhubaneswar, Mar 20: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has decided to extend its full support to the demonstration to be organized by the Odisha Rajya Vidyut Upabhogta Mahasangha in front of the Odisha Assembly on March 21.

The protest is in response to recent hikes in electricity tariffs and the installation of smart meters across the state, both of which have caused significant distress among electricity consumers in Odisha.

BJD spokespersons Lenin Mohanty and Bhrugu Bauxipatra criticised the BJP-led Odisha government for failing to fulfill its promises made during the election campaign.

These promises included providing 300 units of free electricity to every household and ensuring no increases in electricity tariffs. However, the government has not only raised electricity tariffs but also begun the installation of smart meters, which has placed a financial strain on the people of Odisha, the BJD leaders said.

Mohanty emphasized that the BJD's participation in the demonstration represents a strong message of solidarity with the people of Odisha, who have been negatively impacted by the government's failure to keep its promises.

He further stated that, as the largest political party in the state, the BJD views this protest as an important opportunity to stand with the citizens in their fight for justice.
