Berhampur, May 29: In a tragic incident, a woman was allegedly thrashed to death by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as K. Namita of Nimopoli village under Purushottampur police limits of the district.

According to the information, Namita was married to K. Santosh Patra of Benugoura village under Rambha police limits last year. Just days after their marriage, the groom's family began demanding a dowry, insisting on an exorbitant sum of Rs 2 lakh in cash. When the bride's family expressed their inability to meet this demand, the situation turned grim. Tragically, she was beaten to death by her in-laws and husband on Tuesday. However, the in-laws of the victim have fled from the spot after committing the crime.

“I had already given everything he could for his daughter's marriage. However, when the groom's family demanded an unattainable sum of Rs 2 lakh, I found myself unable to meet their demands. Despite my efforts, my daughter continued to endure relentless physical and mental torture. In a desperate attempt to protect her, I brought her back home. However, they took my daughter again by assuring that things would improve. Tragically, these promises were hollow and they killed my daughter.  I have lodged a police complaint and I want those who are involved in this crime should get stringent punishment”, said Namita’s father K. Raghunath.
