Bhubaneswar, Oct 12: As Durga Puja celebrations 2024 sweep across the capital city Bhubaneswar, the city's streets have transformed into a bustling hub of activity, thanks to the vibrant temporary markets set up in front of and near the numerous puja pandals.

With over 185 pandals installed across the city this year, these makeshift stalls are capitalizing on the massive footfall and raking in impressive profits. The festive spirit is in full swing, and with the pleasant weather adding to the allure, vendors are already doing brisk business, as crowds flock to the pujas in large numbers.

The temporary markets, a familiar sight during the annual Durga Puja festivities, are brimming with a variety of stalls that cater to the diverse tastes and needs of the visitors.

From vegetarian food stalls and fast food centers to vendors selling panipuri, chaats, and fried snacks, there’s something for everyone. Additionally, the markets feature shops offering toys, balloons, artificial ornaments, bags, and even traditional dresses. The sheer variety ensures that visitors of all ages find something to indulge in as they soak in the atmosphere of the pandals.

Sourabh Nath, a fast food stall owner from Kendrapara, set up his kiosk at Rasulgarh this year. He expressed his delight at the large crowds attracted by the clear skies and pleasant weather.

“The absence of rain has meant that people are out in full force, visiting the puja pandals and enjoying the food. We’re seeing a surge in business,” Nath shared.

His stall, like many others, offers a tempting array of fast food, attracting both families and youngsters who are enjoying the festivities.

In addition to the food stalls, the markets are home to local artisans like Raju Parida, a 45-year-old potter from Jajpur, who is busy selling his handmade earthenware items.

Parida, who specializes in traditional earthen pitchers, pots, and lamps, noted that sales have been strong.

“The demand for earthenware products has been high this Puja season. I’ve already sold half of my stock,” he said, showcasing the importance of traditional craftsmanship during festive occasions.

Stone-carved household items, such as plates, dishes, and grindstones, are also in high demand, with artisans like Jagabandhu Sahoo making the most of the rush. “I’m seeing great interest in these items, especially the traditional mortar and pestle. It’s a favorite among both locals and visitors looking for unique souvenirs,” he added.

However, not all is quiet on the streets as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has stepped in to ensure that the surge in food stalls doesn't compromise public health.

On the auspicious occasion of Dussehra, BMC officials, along with the Food Safety Commissioner, conducted multiple raids on fast food stalls near major puja pandals in areas such as Rasulgarh, Nayapalli, and Baramunda.

These raids focused on checking the quality and hygiene of the food being served to the large crowds. Stalls selling chaats, gupchup (panipuri), momos, and fried snacks were inspected, with the authorities ensuring that food vendors adhered to safety regulations to prevent any untoward incidents.

With the good weather persisting, the streets of Bhubaneswar are expected to remain packed with people, enjoying the festivities, shopping, and savoring local delicacies at the numerous temporary stalls.
