Cyber fraudsters dupe over Rs 45 crore from Bhubaneswar in 7 months

Bhubaneswar, August 30: Cyber fraudsters have duped Rs 45.84 crore from Bhubaneswar denizens during the last seven months, police said on Friday.

The Commissionerate Police has managed to freeze Rs 10.87 crore and trying to recover Rs 4.8 crore.

Similarly, Cyber Help Desk has received 2754 cyber fraud complaints by July end. While 1438 persons have complained financial fraud, police have returned Rs 1.37 crore to eight victims.

Cyber criminals are using digital arrest method by impersonating themselves as CBI, Crime Branch and NCB officials. Besides, most of highly educated youths have fallen victim by investing in digital trading, said police commissioner Sanjeeb Panda.

According to police data, 662 cases of fraud and blackmailing through social media platforms have been reported during the last seven months and 654 other fraud cases have been received.

The Cyber Police Station has registered only 200 cases and 22 accused have been arrested. On the other hand, nine accused have been served notice in this connection.
