Berhampur, Dec 26: In a groundbreaking achievement, the SUM Hospital at Sitalapalli here has successfully performed an endoscope-assisted adenotonsillectomy using coblation and a debrider on a 5-year-old boy who had been struggling to breath since birth.
The innovative procedure, conducted in the region for the first time, was carried out by Dr. Priyajeet Panigrahi, Head of the ENT department at the hospital.
The young patient, compelled to breath with his mouth open and with symptoms of severe respiratory distress, had been brought to the ENT outpatient department of the hospital.
On evaluation, he was diagnosed with Grade 4 tonsil and Grade 3 adenoids which caused near complete obstruction of the airway. Though treated by different pediatricians and undergoing long-term medication, his condition had not improved.
Dr. Panigrahi recommended an endoscope-assisted powered adenoidectomy combined with harmonic tonsillectomy under general anesthesia. This advanced surgical approach ensures the complete removal of the adenoid tissue under precise endoscopic guidance significantly reducing the risk of recurrence compared to conventional techniques.
“Adenotonsillectomy, when done conventionally, often leaves residual tissues that lead to persistent discomfort and recurrence of the problem,” Dr. Panigrahi said.
He explained that using a debrider and endoscopic vision ensured complete removal and an improved quality of life for the patient.
Deba Prasad Dash, Director of the hospital, described the surgery as a success while stating that the patient was now able to breathe freely without any sign of respiratory distress.
