Bangladesh lifts Hilsa ban: Durga Puja delicacy returns to Indian tables

In a move that will delight seafood lovers in India, Bangladesh has lifted its recent ban on hilsa exports, allowing 3,000 tonnes of the prized fish to reach Indian markets just in time for the Durga Puja festival.

This decision comes as a relief to both consumers and traders, as Hilsa is a highly sought-after delicacy during the festive season. The ban, imposed earlier this month following a change in government, had caused a surge in prices and concerns about potential shortages.

Bangladesh, which accounts for nearly 70% of the world's Hilsa production, considers the fish a national symbol. The caretaker government had initially cited concerns about local supply as the reason for the ban. However, the decision to resume exports for Durga Puja reflects a gesture of goodwill towards India.

This isn't the first time Hilsa exports have been a point of contention between the two countries. A similar ban was imposed in 2012, only to be lifted later due to soaring prices and increased smuggling.

With the ban now lifted, Indian consumers can look forward to enjoying this flavorful fish during the upcoming festivities. The move is also expected to boost trade relations between the two countries.
