Shanaka to the Rescue? Sri Lankan Star Spotted with Delhi Capitals after Brook’s Exit
Ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka has been spotted training with the Delhi Capitals, fueling speculation about his potential signing. Shanaka was even seen participating in a temple visit alongside other Delhi Capitals players, further cementing the rumors.
Brook's Unexpected Departure
This potential move comes after Harry Brook's decision to withdraw from the upcoming IPL season. Brook, who was bought by Delhi Capitals for a hefty INR 6.25 crore, has opted to focus on his international career, a decision made easier as he had earlier been dropped by the franchise. This is the second time the franchise has brought him, the first being in the 2024 auction at 4cr. He was then replaced after the passing of his grandmother. Brook now faces a 2 year ban from the competition due to new BCCI regulations.
Shanaka's IPL Pedigree
While Delhi Capitals haven't officially confirmed Shanaka's signing, his presence is certainly a raised eyebrow. The Sri Lankan brings prior IPL experience, having represented Gujarat Titans in 2023, albeit with limited appearances (scoring 26 runs in three matches). More recently, he played for the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 2025, amassing 164 runs in 12 matches.
For the Records
In contrast, Harry Brook's previous IPL stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023 saw a mixed bag of results. He smashed a memorable unbeaten century against Kolkata Knight Riders but ultimately scored 190 runs across 11 matches with a strike rate of 123.37.
Looking Ahead
The Axar Patel led Delhi Capitals will play their opening match against Lucknow Super Giants on the 24th of March in Visakhapatnam. Shanaka's presence at the Delhi Capitals' camp strongly suggests he is a prime candidate to fill the void left by Brook. His all-round capabilities and prior IPL experience make him a potentially valuable asset for the team as they prepare for the 2025 season.
