Odisha's beloved dairy cooperative, OMFED, is embarking on a major expansion and modernization drive, promising exciting new products and improved benefits for both consumers and dairy farmers. In a recent announcement, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallick outlined a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening OMFED's presence across the state and enhancing its commitment to quality and efficiency.
Chocolate lovers rejoice! OMFED is adding a delectable new treat to its product range. This strategic move aims to diversify the cooperative's offerings and cater to a wider consumer base. In addition to chocolate, OMFED will also launch its own brand of packaged drinking water, tapping into a growing market and providing consumers with a trusted source of refreshment.
But the expansion doesn't stop there. OMFED is set to increase its production capacity with the construction of three new dairy plants in Sambalpur, Berhampur, and Balasore. These facilities will not only boost milk processing capabilities but also create employment opportunities in the respective regions.
"Our primary focus is on ensuring the quality of OMFED products, procuring milk from farmers at fair prices, and modernizing our infrastructure," stated Minister Mallick. To this end, OMFED is upgrading its existing plants with CCTV installations to enhance security and monitor operations effectively.
In a move that will significantly benefit dairy farmers, OMFED is implementing a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This system will streamline payments for milk supplied to panchayat-level collection centers, ensuring that farmers receive their earnings directly into their bank accounts quickly and transparently.
Addressing the growing demand for OMFED products, Minister Mallick confirmed that the Shree Jagannath Temple Trust will be supplied with ghee at a subsidized rate. "Each OMFED unit has a production capacity of around 8 tonnes of ghee per day," he explained. "We are well-equipped to meet the needs of all temples in the state, providing them with high-quality ghee for their daily rituals and requirements."
OMFED is also taking steps to recover outstanding dues. The cooperative has already recovered approximately Rs 82 lakh out of a total of Rs 2 crore in outstanding payments. Minister Mallick issued a stern warning to defaulters, stating that they will face legal action if they fail to clear their dues within seven days.
With these ambitious initiatives, OMFED is poised for a period of significant growth and transformation. By embracing innovation, prioritizing quality, and empowering dairy farmers, OMFED is solidifying its position as a leader in Odisha's dairy industry and a vital contributor to the state's economic development.
