Cuttack, Mar 20: The Jay Jagannath Seva Samiti organized a grand celebration for World Pakhala Day in Cuttack. The event, which brought together approximately 1,000 people, was held at the Mohan Mandap. The celebration featured the preparation of Pakhala, a traditional Odia dish, and a variety of eight different side dishes, all served to the people present there.

The highlight of the day was the gathering of people from various communities, including Hindus and Muslims, coming together to celebrate the dish that holds a special place in Odia culture. Although some Muslims did not take part in the Pakhala meal during the day due to Ramadan fasting, they joined the festivities after breaking their fast.

Ijaz Ahmad Patel, a local resident, mentioned that after completing their Roza i.e. fasting they would enjoy Pakhala with their friends, symbolizing the unity and communal harmony the event fosters.

Pakhala, made by mixing water with rice and letting it ferment, is typically served with various side dishes like badi chura, saga bhaja, chutneys, and fish. It is particularly popular in Odisha during the hot summer months due to its cooling properties. The dish has a long-standing association with Lord Jagannath, and it is often included in the offerings at the Jagannath Temple.

Manoj Panda, the President of the Jay Jagannath Seva Samiti, shared that the organization has been celebrating World Pakhala Day for six years, aiming to promote Pakhala and its cultural significance.

Suprabha Swain, a senior member, also highlighted the importance of the event in strengthening bonds between different communities.

The celebrations today also showcased how the popularity of Pakhala has spread beyond Odisha. With its growing demand, the dish is becoming a beloved part of the culinary tradition not just in the state but across the country.

This year's celebration in Cuttack was a perfect example of how food can bring people together, regardless of their backgrounds, and how traditions like Pakhala continue to unite people in joyous celebration.
