New Delhi, Dec 20: Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar issued a strong warning to lawmakers on Friday, as the final week of the Parliament Winter Session was marred by widespread disruptions following Union Home Minister Amit Shah's comments on Dr. BR Ambedkar.
During the ongoing chaos in the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Dhankhar expressed deep concern over the state of parliamentary proceedings.
He said, “Honourable Members, the world observes our democracy, yet we fail our citizens through our behavior. These disruptions in Parliament undermine public trust and expectations. Our fundamental duty to serve with diligence is being neglected.”
He emphasized that instead of reasoned debate, the House was witnessing only disorder.
“I urge every parliamentarian, regardless of party affiliation, to examine their conscience. The citizens of our democracy—one-sixth of humanity—deserve far better than this spectacle. We are wasting valuable opportunities to work for the greater good of our people,” Dhankhar remarked.
He appealed for introspection among lawmakers and for citizens to hold them accountable.
"These hallowed chambers deserve conduct that upholds our oath, not theatrics that betray it," he stated.
