Bhubaneswar, Nov 1: Properties worth lakhs of rupees reduced to ashes after a massive fire broke out at a cloth store in Bhubaneswar Unit – I Subway Market late last night.
Fire tenders rushed to the spot as locals informed that dense smoke billowing from the underground market.
As many as 30 fire personnel worked hard for long six hours to douse the fire. The flames came under control after some fire personnel managed to go inside breaking open the ventilation duct. Ten fire engines were deployed to douse the fire.
It is reported that the shop caught fire due to short circuit. The flames leaped to nearby shops within no time and gutted lakhs of properties by the time fire personnel brought the fire into control.
However, the actual reason behind the mishap is yet to be ascertained. "The mishap took place at around 12. 15 pm on Thursday night. It took longs hours to douse the fire due to stock of piles of synthetic sarees," said a fire official.
Around 25 garment shops were gutted in the fire that broke out at Unit-I Market Building area late on Thursday night. No one was injured in the incident but garments were damaged due to the fire, a senior police officer said.
