New Delhi, Nov 5: The centre has served a notice to the Wikipedia, an online & free encyclopedi of data, for inaccuracy in presenting information.
The notice has been sent from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Government of India on Tuesday.
In the notice, the government also reportedly asked why Wikipedia shouldn’t be treated as a publisher instead of an intermediary, according to reports those came up in national media.
Earlier, the open source online encyclopedia got embroiled in legal cases in India over allegations of spreading inaccurate and defamatory content by an international media agency.
The notice comes at a time when a legal battle is being fought between news agency, ANI, and Wikipedia in the Delhi High Court. ANI has demanded information about users who made edits to an entry about the company.
The notice also claimed that there was a view that a small group exercises editorial control on the Wikipedia pages that’s presented in a biased and monotonic manner.
Worth mentioning, a Wikipedia post had referred to ANI as ‘the propaganda tool’ of the Indian government for which the news agency reportedly sued the Wikipedia authorities to the Delhi High Court.
