Cyclone Dana: Intensified preparations in Chandabali Block

Bhadrak, Oct 24: As Cyclone Dana intensifies over the east-central Bay of Bengal, preparations are ramping up in Chandabali Block ahead of its anticipated landfall along the Odisha coast. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that the cyclone will hit late on the night of October 24, bringing wind speeds of 100-120 kmph and widespread impacts to the region.

IMD Director Manorama Mohanty confirmed that Cyclone Dana has strengthened into a severe cyclonic storm, currently moving northwest at 12 km/h and situated over the central and adjoining northwestern Bay of Bengal.

Local authorities in Chandabali are taking extensive measures to safeguard residents, particularly in the coastal and rural areas of Bhadrak district. A total of 38 cyclone shelters, along with 152 schools and government buildings, have been designated for emergency use. Evacuations from vulnerable areas are already underway, with teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on standby.

Special care is being taken for pregnant women, who are being transported to the Chandbali Health Center to ensure their safety during the storm. Given the potential for transportation disruptions, arrangements are in place to prioritize their movement to local hospitals.

Additionally, food and drinking water supplies are being prepared for those in cyclone shelters. Fishermen have been warned to avoid riverbanks to ensure their safety. The administration has also deployed loudspeakers across various locations to provide timely alerts and information to the public.

Sandeep Kumar Behera, assistant fisheries officer for Bhadrak, reported that all 911 registered boats in his jurisdiction have been docked at the landing center, alongside 10 fishing landing centers (FLC).

Bhadrak Collector Dilip Routray stated, "We are evacuating people from vulnerable areas. While some are leaving voluntarily, others are being assisted by the police. Three NDRF teams are deployed—one at the headquarters and two in the field. We also have two ODRF teams and four Fire Department teams actively working."
