Viksit Bharat Vision: National Conference Tackles Sustainable Science and Technology
Bhubaneswar – A major conference focused on how science and technology can pave the way for a sustainable and prosperous India kicked off Wednesday at the CSIR- Institute of Minerals & Materials Technology (IMMT). The two-day event, part of the institute's Diamond Jubilee Celebration, brought together a diverse group of experts to explore the critical role of innovation in achieving the nation's ambitious "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) vision by 2047.
The National Conference on "Sustainable Science and Technology for Viksit Bharat," organized in collaboration with the institute's SC/ST Employees Welfare Organization, commenced on March 6th, 2025. The event was officially opened with addresses by esteemed guests, Dr. Rabindra Narayan Behera and Shri Bibhu Prasad Tarai, both Members of Parliament, Lok Sabha.
Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director of CSIR-IMMT, welcomed attendees, and Dr. LD Besra, Chief Scientist, provided an overview of the conference's goals. Dr. Santosh Kumar Behera, the convenor of SSTV 2025, delivered the vote of thanks, concluding the inaugural session.
During his inaugural address, Dr. Behera emphasized the forward-thinking vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He underscored that true progress requires a balance between technological advancement and environmental stewardship. "While we embrace modern technology," he stated, "we must also remember the scientific wisdom embedded in our ancient texts – the Vedas, Puranas, and Upanishads." He highlighted the growing problem of e-waste and urged industries to adopt responsible innovation practices.
Echoing this sentiment, Dr. Tarai emphasized that "Viksit Bharat" is now a national mission. He highlighted India's focus on empowering its power sector, farmers, and youth, building trust as a cornerstone of development. He pointed to initiatives like the "Vigyan Rath" – a mobile science exhibition that toured Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal – as a key example of inspiring young minds to embrace scientific progress. "The remarkable curiosity we've seen shows a bright future," he noted.
The conference's first day featured a poster exhibition showcasing research from students and scientists across various academic and R&D institutions. A panel discussion, headed by Dr. Narayan, centered on the "4M" theme – Mining, Minerals, Metals, and Materials – a vital area of focus for CSIR. Adding to the excitement, the 4M Vigyan Rath, which had been promoting science across Eastern India, made a celebratory return to the IMMT campus.
In the afternoon, Professor Bidyadhar Subudhi, Director of NIT Warangal, delivered the first Plenary Talk, focusing on "Photovoltaic System and its Integration with Smart Grid". The evening culminated in a vibrant cultural program for all attendees.
The conference continues with a highly anticipated talk on March 7th by Dr. Sudhanshu Mani, the innovator behind India's Vande Bharat Express Train.
The gathering drew leading scientists, academics, policymakers, and industry representatives from prestigious organizations like CSIR Labs, ISRO, DRDO, IITs, and NITs. The event is a platform to share cutting-edge research, foster collaboration, and accelerate India's journey toward a sustainable and self-reliant future. The goal is to explore how sustainable practices can be integrated into India's unique socio-economic and environmental context.
