Imphal, December 31: Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Tuesday apologized for the ethnic violence that has ravaged the state, claiming over 250 lives and leaving thousands homeless. He urged all communities to forgive past wrongs, let go of grievances, and work towards building a peaceful and prosperous future together.

In a press briefing, Singh acknowledged the immense suffering caused by the conflict and expressed deep regret for the losses endured by many families. "I want to sincerely apologize for what has transpired in our state. Many have lost loved ones, and many others have been displaced from their homes. I truly regret this," he said. "However, after witnessing a period of relative peace over the past three to four months, I am hopeful that normalcy will be restored in the New Year."

Singh emphasized the importance of moving forward. "What has happened in the past cannot be undone, but I appeal to all communities to forgive and forget past mistakes. Let us start afresh and strive to live together in peace and prosperity," he added.

The Chief Minister noted that the situation had improved in recent months, with fewer incidents of violence. He highlighted that the number of firing incidents had decreased significantly since the outbreak of the ethnic conflict in May 2023. "From May to October 2023, there were 408 firing incidents. Between November 2023 and April 2024, this number dropped to 345, and since May of this year, there have been only 112 incidents," he said.

Singh also shared that the state had made substantial progress in recovering arms and ammunition. "A total of 3,112 looted weapons have been recovered, along with 2,511 explosives," he informed. Additionally, 625 individuals have been arrested, and 12,047 FIRs have been filed in connection with the violence.

The ongoing ethnic conflict between the Meitei community in the Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups in the surrounding hills has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread displacement since May 2023. However, Singh expressed hope that the steps taken in recent months would lead to lasting peace and stability in the state.

As Manipur begins a new year, the Chief Minister's appeal for unity and reconciliation aims to restore harmony and rebuild the state’s social fabric.
