Port Louis [Mauritius], December 28: Mauritius has declared a period of mourning for India's former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday. As a mark of respect, the Mauritius flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings until sunset today, as announced by the Mauritius Prime Minister's Office.
The office also encouraged the private sector to follow suit, displaying solidarity for the revered Indian leader. Mauritius Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade, Dhananjay Ramful, traveled to Delhi to attend Dr. Singh’s funeral.
Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam visited India’s High Commission in Port Louis to sign the condolence book. Reflecting on his interactions with Dr. Singh, Ramgoolam described him as a "gentleman politician and eminent economist" whose contributions transformed India's economy.
“It is with profound sadness that I have just learnt of the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh. His humility, integrity, and calmness will always be remembered,” Ramgoolam wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post, extending condolences on behalf of the people and government of Mauritius.
Dr. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, was cremated today with full state honors at Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi. Prominent leaders, including President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attended the ceremony to pay their respects.
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s legacy as an architect of India’s economic reforms and his statesmanship continues to inspire admiration beyond India’s borders, as evidenced by the tributes pouring in from Mauritius and around the globe.
